HOW TO RESPOND TO CRITICISM
Everyone receives criticism at some point in time and absolutely nobody enjoys the experience.
However, those who respond in a positive way demonstrate that not only are they willing to improve it also shows they have the ego strength to do so – both are qualities of leaders.
Here are a few techniques to use.
DETACH YOURSELF FROM THE EMOTION
Depersonalize yourself from the situation by mentally assuming a professional, problem-solving position.
Ask yourself, what is this person telling me that will help me perform my job better?
ASK FOR CLARIFICATION & SPECIFICS
Politely ask for more details about the negative behavior so you can alter your behavior if it’s warranted.
Frame your inquiry as a question, not a demand.
Admit to your error and thank the critic for taking the time to bring it to your attention, apologize and give assurance that you’ll do your best not to repeat the error in the future.
In most cases, the critic will be a manager of yours and by responding in this manner you’ll be more likely to form a bond between both parties which will serve you well in the future.
